It’s fun to make stuff for no apparent reason.

As I was walking along my favorite trail during this great thaw we’re having, I made a snowball and chucked it into a puddle. Loving the way it splashed with a thud, I thought it’d be fun to record it.

Wedging my iPhone into the snow, I shot splash after splash in slow motion, snow motion if you will. A friendly couple strolling by — Rob & Debbie — engaged me in my madness, clearly amused at what was happening with my now-soaking pants and me squatting in the snow. After kindly offering to help out, we got to chatting and they encouraged me to continue.

Not thinking there’d be a snowball’s chance I’d do anything with the videos, I chilled for the rest of the day until an email came in last night from the helpful couple. They’d been to my website, enjoyed my photos & composition and recommended I post these right here.

While it’s fun to make stuff for no apparent reason, it’s also fun to make something because you’re encouraged to.

So Debbie & Rob Olstyn, this thud’s for you.
